Come From Away is Amazing!

Come From Away, the most popular Canadian musical in history, is making its way around the world and this week it landed in Miami. The Adrienne Arsht Center is simply sizzling with 110-minutes of beauty. It opened on Tuesday and closes on Sunday with matinees on the weekend. See it!

In Come From Away, the audience will encounter a truly human experience running the gamut of emotion. The play will have you on the edge of your seat, laughing one moment, crying the next, nodding along to the music until the very last beat. The play’s pace is frantic, no more than the time it chronicles, but it doesn’t feel rushed or contrived. It just works on all levels.

It’s the story of 7,000 stranded passengers during the morning of 9-11 and the proceeding days. They came from all over the world and were diverted to a tiny, tiny town (with a big airport) in Newfoundland.

All of the conditions and human drama that encompass existence are on display in this riveting musical.

Come From Away is Amazing

Come From Away is one of the best plays Miami will ever see.

The core ensemble company of 12 actors play at least two characters each. The locals of Newfoundland, the passengers and crew of the 38 stranded airplanes, and passer-bys. This helps with the pace because the audience is processing so much character so fast.

It is hard to think of a social science issue not delicately balanced, from homophobia to feminism, Islamophobia, animal rights, war, or the mass media. Time and again all angles of the issue land on the progressive side of the coin. Come From Away feeds off the fear of the outsider (xenophobia) while cuddling up to the warm hospitality of one of the coldest places in North America.

There’s love, loss, redemption, betrayal, humanity all wrapped up in a hokie Canadian setting. It will tickle the heart and warm the soul.

This play has EVERYTHING you need from art.

And from the raucous and prolonged ovation beaming through the halls of the Adrienne Arsht Center, the Miami audience felt the same way.
