Brandon Urrutia on Dickery Pokery

From June 6-23, City Theatre’s Summer Shorts will perform  short plays by Miami’s best emerging playwrights at the Arsht Center. In this series the playwrights share a little with the Jitney about their work.

Love is such a driving force in the things that we do that we never really realize how far we actually go for it. My wife is sick, so let me get a nice bouquet. My husband has been stressed, why don’t we watch The Office for the 10th time? My partner is sad, so let me show them all the pictures of frogs I’ve been hoarding for them.

But, would you go further?

Your wife hasn’t been sexually fulfilled since you got married, how far would you go? That is essentially what Dickery Pokery is about, it’s reception online has been a positive one, so I personally am excited to see how it is received in person!

My writing isn’t just dick jokes, despite how great it would be. A main focus of my work is really me understanding where I belong in the Latinx community and also just working through my own depression. Which is where Dickery Pokery comes into play, I was going through a rough patch a while back and decided to write a fun little ten minute play that would bring a smile to my face. I’m excited for audiences to watch this piece and all the other pieces at Summer Shorts this year!
