Islandia Journal Celebrates New Issue at Dale Zine on Saturday

Islandia Journal is a non-profit periodical of South Florida myth, folklore, ecology, art, and writing. We publish quarterly in print and have begun establishing a presence online — though our digital publication is not officially launched yet. We also plan in-person events related to Miami history, and regularly post hidden histories of our region on social media. I started it not only because I wanted to publish the kind of work I wanted to read but because I felt there was a community around these topics waiting to come together.

In collaboration with Islandia’s editor, Jasmine Respess, and associate editor, Travis Cohen. We parse through all of the submissions in our submittable page, e-mailed pitches, and also commission some specific pieces to curate all of the writing and art that appears in each issue of the journal.

We never set out to have specific themes in these issues but almost always find there are recurring ideas or images pervading the work we like most. In Issue 4, for example, we randomly had a lot of pieces come in that were specifically related to trash and recycling.

Islandia Journal #7 release party is Saturday, April 8 at Dale Zine Shop.

We’ll have Issue 7 for sale, a DJ set by Nicholas G. Padilla whose 2020 album Parrot Jungle remains one of the most incredible Miami space-time continuums, and live galaxy spray painting by Aerosol Factory.

For the rest of 2023 we’ll have three more print issues, an event with contributor Cesar Becerra at Sweethaven Books on May 6th, the announcement of our inaugural artist-in-residence, partnerships with other local community and literary organizations, exhibitions, and more! Year three is gonna be a real one.
