The Jitney Mixtape – Episode 2

Who? What? Where? That’s a lot of questions. All I can tell you with absolute certainty is that I love listening to new music. It’s fun, fascinating and daunting because it’s an endless ocean of songs out there.

With that said, I’d like to introduce you to a new feature at Jitney where each week we’ll have a playlist of  tunes that we think are worth checking out along with my quick thoughts on each track. I’d like to focus mainly on singer-songwriters but my love of all genres keeps me open to everything and I’m always looking to shout out Miami and South Florida bands. Ideally most tracks are a few weeks within release dates but don’t hold it against me if I throw something a bit older for a well rounded playlist.

All these songs are newly released, independent and gigging near you! Please support these artists! Would you like to send your song as a submission? Send an email with relevant links to [email protected] for consideration.

Tiny Towers – I Think She Lied

This song reminds of all the favorite things that British pop in the 90s offered me: catchy hooks, smooth, understated vocal deliveries and energetic beats. You will want to sing along. Who is he?

Bright Forest – Glad You’re Here

This song reminds me of an old friend. It’s comforting and I want to be reminded again and again how we know each other and reminisce. Charming indie rock with a call and response vocal part at the chorus, it’s adorably fun. Wow this band is from Delaware!

Nick County – Racetrack

This song takes you out there into the unknown slowly and before you know it full steam ahead. Vocals timbre is irresistible and so are the melodies and harmonies, it’s hypnotic! But don’t let that stop you from rollicking with those guitar licks. Epic road trip song. Nick County is from Miami, Florida (and is the artist pictured above)!

Annie Bacon – Two Way Street

This song has a swagger. This song makes you want to be the one that walks up to the jukebox after you’ve had a couple. She’s got a full album coming out and we can’t wait to give it a listen. Michigan based songwriter.

Kaurna Cronin – Gotta Get Outta This Place

Oh damn, this submission came all the way from Australia. He’s singing about all the familiar things we can get behind, we’ve had that feeling of wanting to get out of one place or another at some point in our lives. Guitar lines are pretty damn catchy but just wait till the chorus becomes a mantra.

Transit Club – Pretend

This track is the guilty pleasure out of the playlist. It’s extremely poppy with super slick production and it’s infectious but don’t let me convince you, listen to it! They’re from Sweden but could that be a surprise? No way! Those Swedes kill melodies for recess.

Day Joy – White Light

This song is killer, it’s meandering and I want move slowly with it on a hot summer day with nothing to do. Stop the presses this artist is from our home state of Florida, can we get a shout out for Orlando?

Spills – Reflexions

This track is lush and dreamy. Do you like floating and fondling? This is a warm mixture of chillwave, shoegaze and indie sweetness. I don’t know what they are saying but that’s okay because the vibe is everything. Also worth noting this band is from Chicago and I love that city.

Jason Joshua & The Beholders Ft The Colossians – I Don’t Care

UMM WHAT? This track is the reason Miami is so hot and sweaty during the summer. Don’t play this track unless you intend to vibe out. This came out a year ago but it’s worth mentioning over and over again and again.

Yung Heazy – Girl, I’ll Take You Anywhere

This took a while for me to warm up to, it’s slightly sleezy feeling but not Churchill’s dirty floor, maybe just a little sand in your pina-colada. Either way this feels mysterious to me and I like suspense.
