Little Haiti Book Festival Is This Sunday

This Sunday, May 1, the entirely free Little Haiti Book Festival will be celebrated at Little Haiti Cultural Complex. According to their website it’ll feature, “authors from Haiti and the Haitian diaspora, a Haitian documentary, workshops for writers, storytelling and hands-on activities for children, dance and music performances, a community meet and greet with some of Little Haiti’s award-winning VIP guests and community leaders, and more. Our panel topics include Haitian Vodou and Haitian music, with a special presentation celebrating the 100th birthday of two Haitian literary masters: Jacques Stephen Alexis and Émile Célestin Mégie.”

It’s a great event for young ones with mediation and yoga, hands on arts & crafts, dance and drumming workshops, storytelling and free books for children.

All ages will be able to enjoy music by DJ NickyMix featuring Haitian konpa, roots and rare music. Rara Lakay will make a live percussion-based performance. There will be discussions with  authors Jerry Gilles and Carole Demesmin, as well as a screening of the film, The Madan Sara, a documentary that tells the stories of the indefatigable women who work at the margins of Haiti’s economy. Finally there will also be plenty of vendors including our very own Jitney Books.
