MDC Live Arts starts its 2018-19 season this week with two performances of Black Queen Project. Thursday, September 27 and Friday, September 28 at 8 p.m. Miami will have a chance to encounter what has been described as a sonic meditation using “medieval melodies, contemporary poetry, real-time electronics and a voice-controlled interactive star ceiling.”
The work is a collaboration between artist Juraj Kojs and composer/performers Jennifer Beattie and Adam Marks that they promoted as a “theatrical experience employing the tools of technology, classical music, folk melodies, contemporary poetry, and historical exploration.”
Black Queen Project has a synopsis that sounds as if it will appeal to fans of both the avant-garde and the macabre. “The medieval queen Barbora of Celje was an intelligent, powerful ruler whose life was rewritten by her enemies as a myth of evil, witchcraft and vampirism. A recent text by a Slovakian historian unveils how—without questioning—the myth was adopted and embellished.” Audience members are invited and encouraged to dress in their most outrageous Goth attire.
MDC Live Arts Brings the Goods Again
Black Queen Project is the start of this season’s 2018-19 program. Starting on Thursday and going through May, MDC Live Arts will present to Miami, ten different artistic works that encompass the whole gamut of performance arts from theater to music to dance. This year’s line-up MDC Live Arts announced “is dedicated to and representing strong women, (im)migrants and innovators. This year’s artists include voices of resistance, examiners of history and explorers of future.” These are works they say will, “highlight or break the bounds, boundaries, borders and boxes that often define and/or confine us.”
