Waitress the Musical Serves Miami a Delightful Night on Town

The smash Broadway musical Waitress is picking up extra shifts this week at the Arsht Center in Miami serving South Florida audiences a delicious recipe for delight. The play is basically about female empowerment, the wonder of pregnancy, friendship in America, and of course, pie.

What’s more American than pie?

And, in the dialogue and writing, using pies as a metaphor and endless pun supplies a countless amount of wittiness for the audience. Cute, kitschy, quaint and somehow nostalgic and relevant at the same time, Waitress is indeed a fun night out.

Waitress the Musical

The story of a lowly small town waitress in a lifeless, loveless marriage; a diner worker with a penchant for baking pie.

Ingredients: 2 cups romance. 1 cup of sunshine. 3 cups of sugar. Half an ounce of it’s season, Miami. Mix in a dash of snow bird. Whisk briskly in a March breeze. Add in sex appeal, forbidden love, betrayal and redemption. Bake gently for 120 minutes at 85 degrees on a Miami winter night. And voilà: out comes Waitress

Ohh, this is fun. Pie analogies.

Okay. Waitress is 1 part Cinderella, 1 part Pretty Woman, mix with Kinky Boots then gently stir in Alice & Mel’s Diner….add in a wonderful ensemble cast, and some funny and awkward situational comedy, this surprisingly sexy musical holds its own.

Entertainment Weekly calls Waitress the musical an “uplifting musical celebrating friendship, motherhood and the magic of a well-made pie.”

We agree.

Although Waitress the musical didn’t quite bring the house down at the Arsht Center, you’ll definitely leave feeling hungry for something, perhaps Firehouse Derek’s — the best pie in Miami.
