If you’ve hopped on the Jitney, chances are you enjoy the finer things in life. Maybe you also have some little ones at home who you are trying to share your interests with in order to raise well-rounded humans who will also appreciate and champion those fine things you enjoy. With the arts often being limited to certain pockets geographically and arts education usually the first to suffer during academic budget-slashing, it’s good to know that there are entities out there keeping it alive and available.
Young at Arts and the Library
Who else but the public library to step in and pick up the slack? The library isn’t what it used to be. Library systems and the “business” of librarianship have shifted focus to address modern community needs. And like other public institutions, they’ve been forced into creativity with reduced budgets while providing enriching engagements to the communities they serve.
In 2006, the visionary Young At Art Museum (YAA) entered into a formal agreement with Broward County to construct a new museum/library educational complex. Opened in 2012, the 55,000 sq. ft. building has been serving Davie with distinction. Far removed from the “artsy” locales of South Florida and bringing the goods to an appreciative community.
From December 24 through January 7, YAA will host a series of day camps with the little ones in mind—specifically the hard target 3-4 and 5-12 age groups with awesome themes like “Can you Cubism?” and “Festive winter Landscape.” Kids will learn through making art and more importantly, the camps are priced at $55 per day for members and $60 per day for non-members and run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Young at Arts and Arts Education Is Key
Art and hands-on activities have been proven to be assets in learning. It’s amazing how little something as simple as that is taken into account by the powers that be and more amazing still, the great work resource-strapped entities are doing to fill this void. Both the Broward County public library system and YAA have been at the forefront of innovation. More than just books, this partnership has proven a real boon for fostering community and engaging our most important citizens: the children.
